Blackfoot City Council talks drones

Unmanned aerial vehicles or drones, have received the attention of a local City Council with a possible ordnance in the works.

Drones have made headlines in recent years throughout the country. Sometimes we see breathtaking video of drones flying over landscapes, capturing a high definition bird’s eye view. However, over the past couple of years there have been stories of drones flying into areas where they’re not welcomed.

The Blackfoot City Council discussed the future of drones in a Tuesday night meeting.

Mayor Paul Loomis says, it’s better to be safe then sorry when it comes to drones.

One area that concerns City Council leaders, is having them at high school sporting events and flying next to airports.

The mayor of Blackfoot is discussing the possibility of a drone ordinance.

“Across the nation there have been some events that have come to everybody’s attention. There has been some close encounters with UAV’s and commercial aircraft. There have been a couple of crashes, one on the White House lawn I believe,” said Loomis.

The Federal Aviation Administration received more than 700 reports from pilots sighting drones between November 2014 and August 2015.

The mayor also said that UAV’s are becoming more affordable. So the population of drone users will increase.
