Salmon woman charged with murder after baby dies from meth overdose

A Salmon woman has been charged with first degree murder after her six month old baby died from a methamphetamine overdose on January 14, 2015.

According to the Lemhi County Prosecuting Attorney’s office, Heather D. Elam faces one charge of first degree murder. The prosecuting attorney’s office also filed a court notice stating that they would not be pursuing the death penalty in the case.

Court documents detailing the case say that Elam gave the baby a lethal dose of the drug and directly caused the death of the infant.

The investigation of the case has been ongoing for the past year and continues at the point. The case is being investigated by members of the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Department, the Salmon Police Department and the Idaho State Police.
