Curlew Grassland to receive $486,500 to reduce wildfire threat

The Curlew National Grassland near Holbrook will receive $486,500 for watershed restoration work.

USDA Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Robert Bonnie said it’s part of a $40 million federal investment for restoration of forests near growing communities. The program is designed to reduce wildfire threats, protect water supplies, improve wildlife habitat, and support rural economies.

The Forest Service said the work would improve public safety, improve water quality and aquatic habitat, increase riparian and wetland habitat, remove invasive plants, and protect sagebrush habitat. It will also improve grazing and farming practices, improve recreation opportunities, and increase public awareness about restoration work.

The Curlew National Grassland includes 47,000 acres of public land. It is administered by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
