Homeowners frustrated with the amount of roadside trash.
With spring comes spring cleaning. For a lot of people, that often includes a trip to the dump or disposal site. For people living along the Lewisville highway near the Hatch Pit Disposal Site and the Bonneville County Waste Transfer Station, it means cleaning up other people’s trash.
“I’ve seen big branches sometimes in the roads, sacks of garbage, loose random household garbage ranging from pop-cans to parts of an old refrigerator,” said Chuck Traughber who lives along the highway.
The problem for Traughber, his neighbors, and frankly anyone who lives on a road that leads toward a disposal site, is people not securing their loads.
“It’s frustrating because people don’t keep an eye on it. They don’t stop, and don’t think about if their load will still be secure at 60 mph,” said Traughber.
Bonneville County does have an ordinance (found HERE) that requires people to cover and secure their loads. If they don’t, the ordinance states that violators can be fined up to $300 or potentially face jail time. Many other cities and counties have similar ordinances and penalties.
Traughber said he and his neighbors would like to see more enforcement, or at least more reminders, of the ordinance that requires people to secure their loads.
“It just looks trashy and tacky for me and my neighbors that live here,” said Traughber. “How would it look to the people that come visit to have a bunch of trash and clutter on the side of the road?”
