Pocatello human rights group speaks out about anti-Muslim DVDs
The human rights group 2Great4Hate is encouraging the community to speak out, and hold those behind the anti-Muslim DVDs recently found at Idaho State University accountable.
This week, a number of DVDs were left on Idaho State University students’ cars on Monday. Marked “Idaho Muslims and Tommy Robinson,” once played the DVD shows a number of anti-Muslim images.
By speaking out against the DVD, 2Great4Hate hopes to build a better understanding within the community, but also hold the creator of it accountable for their actions.
The group’s president, Dave Finkelnburg, wants to get the message across that not all people in Pocatello think this way. He said Muslims are an important part of the community.
He’s also worried about the harm the DVDs have caused.
“It causes the people who are attacked to wonder, ‘Am I safe in my home?'” Finkelnburg said. “It destroys their sense of well-being. It’s wrong.”
Here’s 2Great4Hate’s entire statement on the matter, written by Finkelnburg:
On behalf of 2Great4Hate I want to express my concern for Muslims in Pocatello and my dismay at the anti-Muslim DVDs that were distributed here this week. We need to allow for the possibility that this material was put together by someone so thoughtlessly immature that this is their idea of a joke. I would hate to think there is anyone in our community so intentionally vicious, ignorant and hateful as this.
However, whether this was concocted as a sick prank or out of genuine hate, the harm done to those targeted by this attack cannot be denied. We are pleased that 2Great4Hate is far from the only group of people who have and will speak out against anti-Muslim attacks here. We intend to work to see that those responsible are held accountable. Moreover, we promise the targets of this despicable act that this community is not compromised of or nor led by people who accept such racist, bigoted thinking.
Our hearts go out to the individuals and families, whether permanent residents or student guests of this community, who were targeted by such an ugly assault. No one should underestimate how much this harms their peace of mind, how much this erodes their sense of security in their own homes, nor how much this hurts those innocent individuals. An attack on any one of them is an attack on us all and we stand with them.
