Zoo celebrates opening day

The sun is out, and the zoo animals are out to play. The Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park celebrated the opening day of the season.

Work doesn’t stop at the zoo over winter.
“Because many of the animals aren’t acclimatized to the cold weather of our winters they need to be taken indoors where they’re warm,” said Zoo Superintendent David Pennock.

Guests flocked to the opening day of the zoo and lines snaked through the parking lot.
“The weather is beautiful, the animals are active and healthy, and the crowd has been good,” said Pennock.

New attractions will be joining the zoo this year.
“A lot of new things, we have a new bactrian camel that was born here a few months ago,” said Pennock. “Baby ring tail lemurs some baby wallabies.”

A new exhibit will be starting Memorial Day.
“We have a new exhibit on snakes,” he said.

This is Pennock’s first season as the zoo superintendent. He transferred from The Museum of Idaho.
“The experience at the Idaho Falls Zoo is like none other,” said Pennock.

“I’ve seen the zebras, the ostriches, and the peacocks,” said Daviel Sterna.
“There are 350-some animals of a 120-some species,” said Pennock.

“You might ask yourself, ‘When was the last time you were at the zoo?'” said Pennock. “It may be time to come back and be reacquainted with the extraordinary experience that’s awaiting for you here.”
