Pocatello City, ISU, and religious leaders to host rally of support

Leaders for the City of Pocatello, Idaho State University, and various religious groups announced today that they will host a rally to show support for the Muslim community after recent events.

The group of leaders met Friday at the Pocatello mosque to discuss recent issues with Muslim students attending the University. Mayor Brian Blad and the Pocatello police took questions from the students about what could be done to prevent crimes against them.

“Pocatello is a very safe community. I know others feel differently. But as soon as you feel unsafe, call us immediately and we’ll come out to you,” said Scott Marchand.

Mayor Blad also issued this statement today in a press release:

“Recently, we’ve seen our community be called something it is not. Pocatellans have been painted as racists, bigots, and intolerant of those who do not share our worldview. Frankly, those are things we are not. The Pocatello I know is a loving, diverse, supportive, and generous community that embraces all who live and visit our city.

As a show of solidarity with our friends at Idaho State University, the City of Pocatello will be “United in Support” and take a stand against, bigotry, racism, and intolerance wherever it shows its ugly head. These disgusting traits have no place in Pocatello and I urge all who call the city home to make a stand as well.”

The rally will be held atthe Idaho State University Hutchinson Quadrangle Monday, April 18th at noon. All are welcome to attend.

A list of those participating in the rally includes:Dr. Fahim Rahim, area leader in the Muslim community; Dr. Arthur Vailas, president of ISU; Brian Blad, mayor of Pocatello; Azza Abugharsa, vice president ofthe Islamic Society of Eastern Idaho; Mackenzie Smith, ASISU president;Ali Alhramelah, ISU student; Dr. Raphael Chijioke Njoku, director and department chair of ISU Global Studies and Languages; and Scott Marchand, chief of Pocatello Police Department.
