Tribes bring tradition and dance to Powwow

It was color, spirit and pride Saturday at the Shoshone-Bannock High School.
Many tribes came out for the Spring “Pow-wow” event.

They showed up with food and tribal merchandise for sale. Many showed off their bead work and costumes, while dancing among hundreds of families and friends.

Each tribe participated in a dance competition. Dancers wore numbers and competed for the best foot work, style and overall presentation.

A member of the Shoshone-Bannock tribe, Tyson Shay says it’s more than just a competition. He says they dance for a reason.

“A Powwow is basically a gathering for all tribes from the north, the south, the west, we got people here from the east. So it’s the coming together of all tribes to display our different dance styles to have fun and create memories and things like that,” said Shay.

“Just to have fun! To hang out with family and friends and make new memories,” said KiRae Gonzalez, a dancer from the event.
