Can’t find your way around Idaho Falls?

City leaders gather Monday to launch their city-wide Signage Program.

More than 140 new signs will be erected throughout the city over the next couple of months, including a waterfall monument that will take the place of an existing monument.

The waterfall monument will be located near the Interstate 15 entryway on Broadway.

The hope is to attract tourists who are heading to Yellowstone National Park to make a stop, not only for hotel accommodations or rest stops but to also enjoy the many attractions that Idaho Falls has to offer.

Some of those attractions include the Museum of Idaho, Idaho Falls Zoo, and Downtown Idaho Falls.

The city began working on the project in 2013 and collaborated with design company Hunt Design and Yesco which constructs the signs.

Yesco will install the large monument signs.

Current complaints regarding parking have prompted the city to look into the way-finding Signage Program.

Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper said way-finding helps reduce driver and pedestrian frustration and improves traffic flow.

“This will become an iconic image for Idaho Falls and help people know what we have to offer,” Casper said.

Director of Parks and Recreation Greg A. Weitzel said the city is excited about the project.

“We created a local stakeholder community group that helped us. About 30 people helped the city develop the design and exactly what they wanted on the sign,” Weitzel said.

The project is estimated to cost $600,000, which was budgeted by the city.

“We know where the zoo is but touristsdon’t, we know where Downtown is, but some people don’t,” Weitzel said.

The Travertine Welcome Rock monument was removed Monday and will make its way to the Idaho Falls Regional Airport.

The new monument will include a water feature that is filtered and recycled.

“It’s environmentally safe, and the water can be winterized to withstand winters in Idaho Falls,” Casper said.
