Idaho safe driving course receiving national award

Keeping our young drivers safe is a major concern for parents and other people on the road. The defensive driving course, Alive At 25, in Idaho is earning a National Safety Council Award.

The National Safety Council announced the program is receiving its “Astonishing Achievement Award.” The Idaho Transportation Department and alive at 25 will be recognized for their amazing training efforts and hard work in making Idaho’s highways safer.

As trainers, our local law enforcement couldn’t be more proud to say they are a part of something that’s impacting our roads.

“It doesn’t surprise me. I feel like there’s a lot of great officers that are trying to do their part in helping people change for the better and to become safer on our roadways,” said Alive At 25 instructor and Rexburg police officer Josh Rhodes.

More than 20,000 students have completed classes since it began in 2007. The Idaho Transportation Department puts on this program. They certify the instructors, provide training materials, and make sure the programs run smoothly.

“In Idaho drivers between 15 and 19 years of age are two and a half times more likely to be involved in a crash than drivers in other age groups. They lack experience,” said King.

Alive At 25 helps young drivers gain that experience by helping them to drive more effectively.

“The best part is seeing the change of attitude from the beginning of the class to the end of the class. You can’t please everybody, but most people at the end of our class are usually pretty happy and they feel like they’ve taken a lot from the class,” said Rhodes.

“There’s no question that defensive driving courses saves lives. It helps drivers become more and more effective — more alert to their surroundings to be better drivers,” said King.

The Idaho Transportation Department and Alive At 25 will get the award in Anaheim, California on Oct. 15.
