Salmon-Challis National Forest manages thunderstorm fires

Firefighters are keeping a close eye on several fires caused by thunderstorms on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

The Boundary Fire, on the Middle Fork Ranger District, had no increase in size and is approximately 50 percent contained. The 40-acre fire is burning in mixed conifer, and is of a mile west of Boundary Creek Boat Launch in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The fire is staffed with 8 smokejumpers, four 20-person crews, a Type I (heavy) helicopter, and one Type II (medium) helicopter.

The Sheldon Fire, on the Middle Fork Ranger District, is approximately 4 acres in size, burning in mixed conifer, and is located 13 miles southeast of Sleeping Deer Lookout in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The fire is staffed with 13 firefighters who continue to construct line around the fire.

The Bull Fire, on the Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger District, a single tree fire, was burning in an open timber and grass fuel type. It is now out. It was located approximately one mile north of Bayhorse.

The Roaring Fire, on the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District is 1,831 acres, burning in a remote part of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness on the ridge between Roaring and Goat Creeks above the confluence of the Middle Fork Salmon and Salmon Rivers. This fire is adjacent to the 2014 Goat Fire and is being managed to allow fire to play, as nearly as possible, its natural role in wilderness.

The Comet Fire, on the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District is 100 percent contained and firefighting resources have left the scene. Interior smoke may still be visible from Highway 93. Please use caution along the highway.

The Twin Peaks Fire, Salmon Field Office, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is 1/10 of an acre, burning in Douglas Fir with a heavy dead and down component, and is located in the 12 Mile Area. The fire is staffed with 4 firefighters and containment was expected Tuesday.

The Albertson Fire, Salmon Field Office, BLM, is 1/10 of an acre, burned in mixed conifer. Fire is controlled.

The Storm Fire, in the Lemhi Pass Area, Salmon Field Office, BLM, 6 miles south of Lemhi Pass was located and found to be on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest.
