Get your ice skates ready for new ice skating rink
A new winter attraction has made it’s way to Rexburg. An ice skating rink will have it’s opening day this Saturday and will be open to the public.
Tri State Tire Company CEO Cy Hepworth, along with his business partner John Hepworth, proposed the idea to build an ice skating rink to Rexburg city officials. Mayor Jerry Merrill got on board with the project and gave the OK to place the ice rink next to Rexburg Rapids.
Merrill suggested the rink be located next to Rexburg Rapids because of the accessible water resource. “The city said come over to Rexburg Rapids and have all the water you want,” Cy Hepworth said.
It took 70 hours to construct the rink. Hepworth said it’s take more to construct a rink than people think. “You don’t just throw water on the ground its more complex than that. We had to catch the right temperature to capture that thick hard ice that people are use to skating on,” Cy Hepworth said.
Merrill played a key role in the project said Cy Hepworth. “He was out here on his hands and knees building the lining for the rink,” Cy Hepworth said.
“It’s cold in the winter and their long you have to learn to play in the snow to have fun here,” Cy Hepworth said.”It takes a community to support a business and we just wanted to give back.”
