Top wedding trends going into 2017

With the new year comes a lot of engagements and planning the perfect wedding. Weddings have evolved from what they used to be; they’ve gone away from the more traditional styles to becoming more modern. For example, wearing shorter dresses, having small ceremonies at the courthouse, or even using food trucks to cater guests are all more commonplace than ever before. Here are some modernized trends we may see a lot of in 2017.

Technology:

“Technology is definitely becoming a much more powerful part of the process of the bride. The millennial bride wants to do everything online,” said Anna Smith, owner of Signature Party and Events.

Customizable websites, hashtags, filters — all to make a statement at a modern wedding.

“Facebook Live is going really big, and then Snapchat and Instagram, especially. Something that’s we’re doing for Snapchat is these custom geo-filters. So you can take it for the wedding day and make it specifically so people can reflect on what’s happen right there and right now,” said Andy Johnson, manager at DJ ANDX.

Flowers: Brides are shying away from typical one-type-flower pieces.

“Well, I’ve noticed that it’s just a lot of whimsical greenery. Just a mix-match of different types of flowers. Not necessarily any one in particular,” said Micha Styhl, owner of Floral Art.

Food: Buffets and food trucks are being seen at weddings more and more. These options are cheaper, and a more fun, alternative to the traditional-single-plated meals.

“A lot of brides and grooms want to kind of save that money for either the honeymoon, or for maybe the down payment on their house. So we offer them a little bit more laid-back style — and we can do it buffet style for them. They just have their guest go through. They can pick what they like, so they have a variety of foods,” said Veronica Holverson, service manager at Famous Dave’s.

“What we’re finding is nobody is really fitting into a mold. Everyone’s got a new idea and something different that they want to do,” Smith said.

The Southeast Idaho Bridal Fair kicked off Friday evening. It ends Friday night at 8:30 p.m., and will be up and running again Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $5 at the door, and discounts can be found on the fair’s Facebook page and website.
