Ancient Rome comes to the Museum of Idaho
In the famous words of the Roman leader Julius Caesar “Veni, vidi, vici,” or “I came, I saw, I conquered,” that’s what Eastern Idahaons will be saying once they travel back in time at the new Museum of Idaho Rome exhibit.
The Museum of Idaho is getting ready to open its doors come this Friday. Visitors will have the chance to catch the history of ancient Rome from its founding’s to its collapse including its leaders, emperors, philosophies and contribution to civilization.
Museum Curator Carrie Athay said the Roman Empire contributed largely to the development of our civilization.
“They were a huge dominating force that controlled much of the world for a very long time,” Athay said.
The Western Roman Empire may have fallen more than 1,500 years ago, but its rich legacy of innovation and invention can still be seen today.
The Romans were prodigious builders and expert civil engineers, and their thriving civilization produced advances in technology, culture and architecture that remained unequaled for centuries. From aqueducts to newspapers.
“The technology that came out of the Roman Empire we still see in much of today’s technologies. So a lot of the things you’ll see are familiar to us, just changed a little bit,” Athay said.
Visitors at the museum will learn about modern day technologies such as an Abacus, which was designed by the ancient Romans. The first portable calculating device that was used by moneychangers and bankers, businessmen, and engineers. This Roman abacus, made of bronze and dating from the second century CE, is currently on display at the museum.
Another sight visitors will see and learn about was the clothing Romans wore including what Gladiators wore during that time period.
“We are so excited to open our doors and for everyone to get hands on and learn about Rome,” Athay said.
Families set their eyes on far off places such one of the largest and famous wonders of the world the Roman Coliseum.
