DIY business helps homeowners with flood problems
Temperatures are on the rise and all the melting snow is flooding the streets and homes.
A new business in Idaho Falls is allowing the do-it-yourselfer to be able to handle it on their own.
“It’s really bridging that gap, between the professional and the do-it-yourselfer. It’s putting the tools, the high horse power stuff, you know, the stuff that’s directly related to what their going to need. So, it’s putting it in the homeowner’s hands,” Dry It Yourself Center owner Brando Morgan said.
Many businesses and homeowners are dealing with the thick snow on roofs, while roads are beset by another monster; flooding.
This year, the snowpack has definitely been significant, he said.
On a day like Tuesday, he said, the warming and cooling cycle is the perfect scenario for ice dams.
“The water is refreezing on the end of the eves and backing that water up, further onto the roof that it was ever designed for,” Morgan said. “We’re also getting roof failures on some structures that can’t quite handle the extra weight.”
On average, the company has been getting numerous calls a day and these are the types of calls that have been coming in.
“A lot of this water is obviously getting through the roofing system, into the attic system, into the main floor. It could keep going to the floors below it, even. We’ve seen water go all the way down, until we hit the bottom level,” Morgan said. “It could be passing behind cabinets, through wall cavities, under hardwood flooring, under linoleum. It could be going into a lot of places you just never expected water your roof to run.”
The company has been open for just a few months and Morgan said it is overwhelming especially, with this kind of thawing.
“Just from what we’re getting, we’re almost overwhelmed. We’re bringing in a lot of people, friends and pros we’ve worked with in the past to say, ‘Hey, we need extra help today and they’ve really been stepping up and helping us out,” Morgan said.
Water damage needs to be treated as soon as possible. If these things are not treated flooding from ice damns can go into places you never expected.
“Interior flooding, as always, is a health concern because not dried out things can start to grow. So mold becomes an issue and we need to get those dealt with as soon as possible, he said.
