Kelly Canyon sees increase in business during last ‘long’ weekend

With President’s Day among us, it marks the last long weekend before spring.

Skiers and snowboarders took advantage of this at Kelly Canyon Ski Resort.

Mondays are usually slow but today was pretty busy.

Kelly Canyon has had more than 200 guests and counting.

Rental shop manager Kelly Nelson said this is the best time to come.

“We’ve been pretty busy this whole season. We’ve have a record-breaking snowfall, but with the weather kind of warming up as it is, you know, you definitely want to get in before the weather turns south on us,” Nelson said.

Jessica is a first-time skier. She thought today would be a good day to start!

“My fiance and her long-time friend are part of the ski patrol so she’s been kind of getting on my butt about skiing for a longtime because she’s really passionate about it!.” she said.

Jessica prefers skiing over snowboarding.

“I am a skater, not a skateboarder and there seems to be a correlation between people who like to skateboard and snowboard because it’s a lot of similar motion. The whole forward motion and having my feet not bound together seems a lot more natural for me,” she said.

Seven-year snowboarder, Mark Fitch came out with his young son.

“Nice weather, nice and warm. Came up here to bring my kids up asking. I snowboarded for about 7 years. I’m better at it,” Fitch said.

“Everyone wants to get in one last hoorah before the season’s over. Today’s the day to come in,” Nelson said.

The resort will be open until the middle of march, Nelson said.

Kelly Canyon is set to host the Slalom Race this Saturday, February 25 at 2 p.m.

The following Saturday, March 4, the resort plans to host a Fat Bike Race.

You will need to use a fat-tired bike.
