Snowy winter means big business for those in local ski industry

Winter in Idaho this year has been crazy. Everything from record snow levels to road closures. But thankfully, many people are trying to make the most of it.

“If you complain about it in town, get up on the hills and you will not be complaining about it anymore,” said Jacqueline Malloy, a guest at Pebble Creek Ski Area in Inkom.

And for local some ski shops and resorts, this season has given them the boost in sales they need to survive or even grow.

“We have had way more guests than we have had in a while. we are maxed everywhere expect the slopes, there is plenty of room on the slopes,” commented Mary Reichman, the general manager at Pebble Creek.

So many people have come up to ski and snowboard at Pebble Creek that the parking lot has been packed.

“Having a hard time finding a place to park, it sucks, but it is a great feeling because so many people are up here having a good time,” said ski guest, Allen Williams.

Thankfully, Pebble has plans on keeping up with the increase in business. Reichman said they plan on expanding the parking lot this summer.

Pebble Creek is not the only one benefiting from all the snow this winter. Outdoor stores like Element Outfitters in Pocatello has also seen a boost in sales. They sold out of everything from snowshoes to sleds.

“We have never sold so many sleds. Snow brings in business. Its been a good boost,” said John Taylor, an employee at Element Outfitters.

If you are looking for a way to enjoy another round of snow, grab some snow gear from a local store and head up to the slopes. Pebble Creek will be offering discounted beginner ski and snowboard lessons the next two weekends from 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. For more information, click here.
