Attempted escape by Caribou County jail inmates thwarted by alert guards

The Caribou County sheriff says the quick actions of jail staff stopped an attempted escape July 31.

In a press release posted on the Sheriff’s Office Facbeook page, Sheriff Kelly Wells said, “a group of inmates attacked a detention deputy in an attempt to escape… the detention deputy was able to fight back and call for help.”

Wells said with the assistance of another guard, the inmates were contained to a jail cell.

“At no time was the public in any danger as the internal security protocols were in place and the detention deputies were able to contain the incident to the cell it originated in,” the press release said.

The two deputies involved did sustain injuries. They were treated and released from the hospital.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and Soda Springs Police Department were called to assist with the incident. Tri-County Sheriff’s Association investigators are now conducting an investigation into the attack and attempted escape.
