Deputies investigate controversial horse-training incident
The Teton County, Wyoming Sheriff’s Office is investigating an allegation of animal cruelty at an outfitter’s property in Wilson.
The Sheriff’s office was called at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to a report that a horse was tied down in an inhumane manner.
Deputies found the horse was tied down. They talked to the owner and consulted with veterinary experts and the Wyoming Brand Inspector. It was decided that, while outdated, the training methods being used by the outfitter were legally acceptable.
On Wednesday morning, the Sheriff’s Office learned the horse died and returned to the scene. The owner was re-interviewed and voluntarily surrendered the carcass for further testing.
A veterinarian collected blood, urine and tissue samples that will be sent to the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory for testing to determine the cause of death.
Sheriff’s Department spokesman Detective Sgt. Todd Stanyon said the incident is being investigated to determine if a crime has occurred.
The Sherriff’s office has obtained a copy of the video as evidence.
While it elicits a strong emotional response, the Sheriff’s office said it must investigate in an analytical manner.
If the Sheriff and Teton County Attorney’s Office determines there is evidence of a crime, he said criminal charges would be pursued.
