Interpreters needed for foreign eclipse visitors

The city of Rexburg and the BYU-Idaho campus will be filled with eclipse watchers the next few days, many of whom are from foreign countries and may not speak English well. Public safety officials want to make sure there is someone available to help interpret for them in case of medical and other emergencies. They are look for volunteers.

“We’re looking for interpreters,” BYU-Idaho public safety director Steve Bunnell said. “We need people who speak a foreign language fluently, who can help with law enforcement and emergency first responders. We’re creating a list. If they contact our department we’ll put them on the list and share that with the sheriff’s office, and if we run into someone that speaks the language they’re fluent in, they will be contacted to provide assistance.”

If you know a foreign language and would like to be on the volunteer list, call the BYU-Idaho public safety office at 208-496-3000.
