Malad native among Green Berets injured in Afghanistan explosion

A Malad High School graduate is among a group of Special Forces soldiers hurt in Afghanistan this week.

The parents of Wren Murray told KIFI/KIDK sister station KUTV in Salt Lake City that their son, a Green Beret, was one of seven soldiers hurt in a Wednesday incident. Aaron Butler, of Monticello, Utah was killed.

“I can’t even imagine what they were going through and what they will go through,” Murray’s mother, Trisa, told KUTV.

The Murrays say the soldiers were clearing a mosque after reports that ISIS terrorists may have been inside. During the clearing, a bomb went off. Wren was hurt trying to help his fellow Green Berets.

“The report that we got is Wren was trying to help people and shooting back at the same time,” Murray’s father, Scott, said.

Wren grew up in Malad and was a running back for the school’s football team. His parents said he suffered a mild head injury, and shrapnel wounds to his neck and arm. He remains at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.

“He downplays and says he’s fine,” Trisa said. “I can tell it’s really hard.”

Murray was expected to be back with his unit Saturday.

“Our freedom isn’t free,” Trisa said. “These soldiers are giving their lives for America.”
