Idaho Falls man charged in connection with shooting

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Daniel Valenzuela Sagasta, 36, of Idaho Falls after a shooting incident at 4154 E. 700 N. in Rigby Sunday.

According to reports, Sagasta was involved in a fight with Jason Hjelm,45. During the fight, Sagasta fired a shot from a gun that struck Hjelm in the left shoulder.

Sagasta left the scene. Hjelm was transported by private vehicle to Madison Memorial Hospital, which reported the gunshot to police. He was treated and released.

Sheriff’s Detectives arrested Sagasta without incident.

According to deputies, the two men knew each other.

Prosecutor Paul Butikofer said Sagasta was being charged with felony aggravated battery with a weapons enhancement, felony aggravated assault with a weapons enhancement and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to police, the public is not in danger, and the shooting was an isolated incident.

No other information was released.
