What to do incase of a mass shooting

No one ever expects to be in a shooting like what happened in Vegas. But are you prepared to stay safe if you are?

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Department gives three tips to stay safe: run, fight and hide.

“Looking for a place of cover, a place of safety or a place to escape,” Sgt. Bryan Lovell, Bonneville County Sheriff’s Department, said. “And also recognize that there might be a lot of other people that are also looking for that or may need help looking for that.”

In situations like shootings, helping others can save lives.

“People should also get in the mindset to prepare themselves to help other people,” Lovell said. “Or assist people that need help getting out or escaping with medical attention or whatever those needs may be.”

You might find yourself fighting back.

“Also be prepared to fight in the event that you have to fight or attack or survive depending on what’s happening,” Lovell said.

Whatever you do, don’t freeze up.

“The worst thing you can do is do nothing,” Lovell said. “It takes a minute to soak in and figure out if what you’re seeing is what you’re seeing and then you need to react whether that is to help people, to move or to fight.”

The sheriff’s office also says to report anything suspicious you see, even if it isn’t an emergency, it could still help or save someone’s life.
