Burn permits required beginning Friday
Beginning Friday, burn permits are required for burning anywhere outside city limits in Idaho. The permit requirement is in effect from May 10 through October 20. The exception is campfires.
Some cities and counties or local fire districts may have additional or alternative permit systems in place.
According to the Idaho Department of Lands, burning can also be limited based on current fire restrictions in a given area. Additional information is available at your local fire department.
Burns must also be in compliance with state air quality regulations. For help with the burn permit system you can call the Idaho Department of Lands and air quality information through the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. You may also call Idaho DEQ at 208-528-2650 in Idaho Falls or 208-236-6160 in Pocatello.
For additional information please refer to the Idaho Fire Prevention website or the Idaho Fire Info website for specific and current fire restrictions and information.
Most cities have specific requirements, but in Idaho Falls, recreational fires are permitted, but a permit is required for bonfires and irrigation or weed control. It is illegal to burn leaves, trash or construction debris inside city limits and burn barrels are strictly prohibited.
“When we encounter burning of trash and other debris inside city limits, we extinguish the fire and educate the property owner,” explains Fire Marshal Scott Grimmett. “If a citizen is doing everything in accordance with the fire code but their fire is producing a significant smoke hazard from wet or unclean burning wood, the fire may be extinguished at the discretion of the responding fire official.”
