Parents sue after 19-year-old shot, killed by Utah police

The parents of a Utah teenager are suing police over the death of their son who was shot and killed by an officer last year.

In a lawsuit filed Thursday, Tiffany and Aaron James say their son 19-year-old Zane didn’t pose a threat as he fled the scene of a robbery and shouldn’t have been shot.

Zane James was killed by off-duty Cottonwood Heights police officer Casey Davies after police say he robbed a store in Sandy with an airsoft gun.

The lawsuit says James the replica weapon wasn’t dangerous, and he was “limping seriously” after crashing his motorcycle.

The lawsuit alleges that authorities tried to misconstrue the facts of the case to protect Davies.

Cottonwood Heights police declined to comment to the Salt Lake Tribune.
