Chicago is keeping hundreds of migrants at airports while waiting on shelters and tents

CHICAGO (AP) — As Chicago struggles to house asylum-seekers, the city is using a shuttle bus center at O’Hare International Airport. The use of airports to house migrants has been rejected elsewhere and highlights what has been a haphazard response to the crisis. It also is stirring up concerns about safety and the treatment of people fleeing violence and poverty. The city says it’s slowly adding more housing options, including winterized tents. Most of the 14,000 immigrants who have arrived in Chicago during the last year have come from Texas, largely under the direction of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. Many are from Venezuela.
