Blackfoot teens to open SLC concert

Two Blackfoot teens are warming up their voices and their hands this weekend ahead of a huge opportunity.

On Tuesday, Cameron Baker and Josh Spencer will open a Salt Lake City concert for singer Dia Frampton.

“I’m marching to my very own beat,” sang Baker.

It’s a beat that got him a prom date in May, and now, a big gig with pianist, Spencer.

“I don’t want to say it’s torture, but, it’s nerve wracking,” said Baker.

“I’m really excited. I think it should be great,” said Spencer, who also admitted to some nerves.

The Blackfoot duo will open for Frampton, who’s best known as runner-up on NBC’s first season of singing competition, “The Voice.”

Baker, a vocalist himself, said they’ll have 15 to 30 minutes on-stage and hope to play all original songs.

“I’ve been writing lyrics. Josh writes piano parts,” said Baker. “We’ve been having nightly 2 1/2-hour to three-hour cram sessions in his living room.”

The opportunity came through a Facebook post by Salt Lake venue The Complex. Baker sent in a sample song, and then a week and a half ago, a response came back in the middle of the night.

“I kind of freaked out in the basement,” said Baker. “I was just with my brothers.”

The recent Blackfoot High School grad has dreamed of being a pop star since he started piano lessons in the sixth grade. If that doesn’t work out, he plans to teach music.

“I guess it’s just something that’s kind of in you,” said Baker.

But, that wasn’t the case for Spencer.

“When I was, like, 10 years old, I actually quit the piano,” said Spencer. “I’d been taking lessons for a couple years. I said I’d never play the piano again, but it didn’t turn out that way.”

The teens aren’t sure what gigs are waiting on the other side of the upcoming performance. But they do know Baker will head off to Westminster College in the fall, Spencer will go back to Blackfoot High School, and they’ll play together as much as they can.

The concert is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at The Complex in Salt Lake City. For discounted tickets, contact Cameron Baker at 208-709-9617.
