Man crashes into canal in car chase

An Idaho Falls man was hospitalized Sunday night after he drove a car into a canal.

It happened around 10 p.m. on U.S. 91 at milepost 84.6, near Fort Hall.

Idaho State Police said 47-year-old Ernest Bercier was attempting to outrun a Bannock County sheriff’s deputy after failing to stop for a traffic violation.

Troopers said Bercier collided with a 2003 Dodge Caravan driven by 33-year-old Aaron Martin of Chubbuck.Bercier drove into the canal after the crash.

Bercier, and his passenger, 43-year-old Glenda Dixey of Pocatello, were transported to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment.Martin and his passengers were not hurt.

The highway was blocked for about two hours as a result of the crash.
