Century High School wins state drama championship

Thirty-four drama students at Century High School placed first at the 4A Championships in Boise this weekend, taking home their school’s first state championship.

“We were sitting in the chairs and holding hands as tightly as we could waiting to hear the awards,” said drama student Ashley Cweifel.

After 14 years of competing, this is Century’s first time as state champion. This year they were up against nearly 500 students from dozens of other high schools.

“That’s fantastic. It’s wonderful to be part of the class that made that happen,” said student Arthur Judd.

But students say winning is only secondary.

“We don’t worry so much about finding content that’s first place material. We more worry about ourselves as actors, and creators and building ourselves as people,” said Cweifel.

After just two years as part of Century’s drama troupe, Jorri Johnson said her confidence is at an all-time high.

“I was just doubting myself much more and this year I’ve learned to come within myself, and feel comfortable in my skin and with my skills,” said Johnson.

It’s a lesson students hope all who watch them perform will take to heart.

“It’s an emotion and it’s a project. It’s a story that people can enjoy,” said Judd.

In addition to the state championship, Century also picked up eight excellent awards and 47 superior awards.
