Delivery services urge caution against package thieves

While Monday was the busiest day of the year for post offices across Idaho, these upcoming days leading up to Christmas are usually busy for thieves looking to ruin your holiday spirit.

The Pocatello Police Department said, although the local community doesn’t see a high rate of package thieves, it doesn’t mean to forget using caution, since the holidays tend to spur higher than normal rates of crimes of opportunity.

“A package left on the front porch, a vehicle left unlocked, or even a purse left in a shopping cart,” Pocatello Police Dept.’s Lt. Paul Manning described. “To eliminate those crimes of opportunity, hold onto your purse, lock your car, and even have a trusted neighbor or friend grab your packages off your porch once they are delivered.”

Pocatello UPS store manager Brian Bernasek even urges taking that extra step to sign for your package upon delivery.

“There are some scrooges out there, I’ll tell ya,” Bernasek said. “Have a signature required on there. It does cost a little bit extra, but it’s definitely the little bit of extra money to save your gifts.”
