Hunters not completely happy with auctioning big-game tags

While 55 percent of hunters took to the poll their acceptance towards auctioning tags, the survey also indicated minimized approval for full implementation of 12 tags.

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission is seeking public feedback on a proposal to offer five tags for action, which include elk, mule deer, mountain goat, pronghorn, and moose.

The idea of 12 tags comes after the 2012 Idaho Legislature giving authority up to the 12 “Governor’s Wildlife Partnership” big-game tags. They include three each for deer elk, pronghorn and one for bighorn sheep, moose and mountain goat.

The commission directed Fish and Game staff to create a proposal where five tags to auctioned for the 2017 season by qualified nonprofit organizations dedicated to conservation.

Ninety-five percent of the proceeds from the tags would go to Fish and Game. The remainder would be used for wildlife habitat projects and other wildlife projects.

The auction takes place Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at the Southeastern Region Fish and Game Office, 1354 Barton Road.
