Firehouse owner reaction to mural’s approval to stay

After pocatello city council’s decision of the mural’s fate last night, many people are happy that the mural will stay right where it is.

Even though the council meeting was mixed with different opinions, many agreed that it was a timeless piece of artwork.
The mural resides on the side of the Old Town Firehouse, and even its owner, Stan gates, was thrilled about the council’s decision.

Gates says he just doesn’t understand why people would say they like the mural but figure it “inappropriate” for the area.

“Being an artist we couldn’t just put gray stucco on it. We wanted to put art work on it. Something big! Because it was a big piece,” said Gates, who operates the Fine Arts Gallery on Center Street.

He says he has no plans in the immediate future for more murals around town. But when he does, he’s going to approve it first with the city.
