Police arrest man who hid handgun in Fred Meyer
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - UPDATE: Idaho Falls Police have identified and apprehended the person involved.
At approximately 8:30 Tuesday morning, officers responded to the area of N Woodruff Avenue between E Lincoln Road and Yellowstone Hwy for a report of a suspicious male.
The caller recognized the male from photos circulated by police through media as the person from this incident.
Officers responded and spotted Derek Martin hiding in the area. After realizing he was surrounded by officers, Martin gave himself up and was detained without incident.
Martin, a 39-year-old Idaho Falls resident, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a corresponding parole violation, and has now been booked into the Bonneville County Jail.
ORIGINAL: Police want to question a man who they say left a loaded handgun in the Idaho Falls Fred Meyer.
Security footage showed an unknown man walk inside shortly after noon on Saturday and hide the weapon in an aisle.
The man stayed inside the store for about an hour, then left.
Officers say a round was in the chamber when it was found.
They are trying to identify the man to learn why he left the weapon behind.
