AAA tips to get ready for rainy and chilly road conditions

BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) – With freezing temperatures back in the forecast across the Gem State, AAA is reminding drivers to prepare for the wet and frosty weather ahead.

“Each year, we all need to knock a little rust off and remember our fall and winter driving habits. If you’re not prepared for a possible loss of traction, a routine trip can quickly turn into a bad situation,” AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde said.

Here are some of AAA’s tips to get ready for rainy and chilly road conditions:

  • Watch for slick spots on curves, hills, and bridges.  Water may accumulate at the bottom of hills, leading to potential hydroplaning.
  • Ice is more likely to form in the early morning and late afternoon, but it may persist throughout the day in shady areas and at higher elevations.
  • Sand, kitty litter, or even a floor mat can be used to restore traction.
  • Replace windshield wipers that are skipping, streaking, or cracking.
  • Avoid aggressive acceleration, braking, and turning to retain traction as much as possible.
  • If you start to slide, keep steering in the direction you want to go.

“This time of year, we remind drivers to check their tires to ensure they have adequate tread,” Conde said.  “A quick way to check is the quarter test – turn a quarter upside down in the tread, and if you can see the top of George Washington’s head, it’s time to think about replacing your tires.”
