CDBG program looking for input at annual Needs Hearing Oct. 19

City of Pocatello

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - The City’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is gearing up for next year and is seeking public input on the CDBG Annual Plan and other affordable housing needs.

The city will be holding its annual Needs Hearing on Oct. 19, 2023, during the regularly scheduled City Council Meeting at 6 p.m., 911 North 7th Avenue.

The city announced this opportunity for organizations and citizens to comment and provide input on any housing and community development needs to further the CDBG program goals of providing decent housing, creating a suitable living environment, and expanding opportunities for low- and moderate-income persons. The city’s long-term plan for CDBG outlines goals and objectives as they relate to housing and community development needs. The Needs Hearing may address housing and community development needs, proposed activities, proposed uses of funds, and review of program performance. In addition, this feedback will inform all HUD-related projects for the city including grant applications and federally-funded projects.

Some areas of need we are looking for feedback include:

  • What are the greatest housing needs in Pocatello? (ex: affordable homeowner housing, affordable rental housing, assistance with purchasing homes, assistance with rent, etc.)
  • What are the greatest needs for services in Pocatello? (ex: mental health services, accessibility improvements for persons with disabilities, homeless services, substance use services)
  • What is the greatest need for community facilities? (ex: child care centers, community centers, healthcare centers, park & rec facilities, youth centers)?
  • Are you aware of Fair Housing requirements (which prohibit discrimination in buying, selling, renting, or lending based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, nationality, familial status)?

After review of the Needs, City Staff will prioritize projects that can address these areas. Recommendations will be made to City Council for their review and approval at a meeting in January and, if approved, submitted to HUD for final approval.
