Idaho State pulls off miraculous comeback win over Eastern Washington
POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - On a historic Saturday in Holt Arena, the Idaho State football team came back from a 27-point deficit in the second half to take down Eastern Washington 42-41.
The Eagles started off strong with a 21-0 lead at the beginning of the second quarter. Soujah Gasu scored on a 38-yard scamper to put the Bengals on the board.
The Eagles then matched with two more touchdowns to take a 28-point lead, but a touchdown connection from Hunter Hays to Chedon James late in the first half made 35-14 at halftime.
Eastern Washington added a pair of field goals to start the third quarter to make it 41-14 Eagles, but that's when things started getting interesting.
With less than two minutes left in the third, Jordan Cooke connected with Cyrus Wallace on a 15-yard touchdown grab to make it 41-21 going into the fourth quarter.
Gasu and Aaron Blancas would each add a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth to make it a six point game with just a few minutes left.
Needing new live, the kicker Thomas Kopcho delivered with a perfect onside kick that fell right into the hands of Tylor Bohannon.
On the final drive, Cooke found Christian Frederickesen on a 4th and 9 and was tackled at the one-yard-line.
Hays would takes it into the endzone on the next play and a Kopcho PAT gave the Bengals a 42-41 lead.
The Eagles made a final drive to get in field goal range, but missed a 38-yard-attempt with just seconds left to give Idaho State the stunning win.
The Bengals are back in action next week traveling to Portland State to take on the Vikings.
