LOS LUNAS, New Mexico (KOAT) — Two people, including a Los Lunas High School student, were arrested after a firearm and marijuana were discovered on campus.
The incident started after an LLHS resource officer responded to reports of a student inside a nonstudent vehicle during school last Wednesday. The officer ordered the driver, 19-year-old Gabriel Abeyta to leave the school property.
Student Kaedence Duke, 18, was told to leave the vehicle to be escorted to a school administrator. Duke attempted to leave her backpack in Abeyta’s vehicle before it was searched on campus.
LLHS assistant principal Regina Lucero searched the bag and found a loaded pistol, a bottle of whiskey and a marijuana grinder. Duke managed to leave the building after the firearm was found in the backpack.
Duke fled from resource officers with the help of Abeyta’s vehicle. Duke is being charged with felony possession of a firearm on the school campus and evading police, along with marijuana and alcohol possession charges.
Both were arrested later on March 8. Abeyta has been charged with reckless driving after the escape attempt.
Duke will make a court appearance on March 29 at 9 a.m.
