Biden’s early certitude on Israel gives way to the complexities and casualties of a brutal war

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has said the Israel-Palestinian conflict can’t go back to the “status quo” before Hamas’ brutal surprise attack on Oct. 7 and Israel’s devastating response in Gaza. But charting a new path in the region — even if Israel is successful at removing Hamas from power in Gaza — will require a change in the U.S. approach. After decades of trying to manage the conflict, the U.S. is confronting the limits of what it can do to affect the outcome — not only about the war, but what comes after it.
