Evacuation notices upgraded for Stanley residents
UPDATE Wed, Aug 28 12 pm (KIFI) - Custer County Sheriff's Office has posted on Facebook that they have upgraded the evacuation status near Stanley.
The Custer County Sheriff's Office has moved Zone 1 and the lower section of Zone 2 (including Lower Stanley) into GO status. Zone 2 (which includes Stanley) remains in set status. Zone 3 and Casino Zone remain in SET status.
Zone 4, the area around Redfish Lake, and Zone 5, around Buckhorn and the Fish Hatchery, are now in the READY status.
The Boise County Sheriff's Office is making changes and upgrading subdivisions due to increased fire activity. Additionally, they are placing all homes along the Highway 21 corridor from milepost 82 to 85 under a Level 1 evacuation alert, advising residents to be prepared. The lightning-caused fire grew approximately 9,500 acres Tuesday to 70,745 acres and zero percent contained.

ORIGINAL STORY: STANLEY, Idaho (KIFI) - Evacuations are still in place for people near the Wapiti Fire burning near Stanley.
The fire grew more than 2,000 acres on Monday to 70,271 acres. It is zero percent contained.
The Custer County Sheriff’s office said Zone 1 is in the go status, Zone 2 is in the set status, and Zone 3 is in the ready status.
The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation center for people affected by the fire. It is at the Stanley Community Center at 510 Eva Falls Avenue. The Red Cross is also prepared to open a shelter in Challis if necessary.
The fire has closed State Highway 21 from east of Lowman to Stanley.
The lightning-caused was first reported on August 24, 2024.
A community meeting will be held Tuesday night, August 27, at 6 p.m. at the fire station in Lowman. The meeting will be streamed live on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/wapitifireinfo2024/.
