Cold front brings wind, rain, and snow to area for the weekend

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- A cold front is bringing gusty winds with rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains this weekend. The moisture will start to move into the area Friday night and last into the start of the new week. That will be followed by drier and warmer conditions by midweek.

A wind advisory remains in effect for the Snake River Plain until 9pm Friday night. Some wind gusts could potentially go beyond 50 mph. There will be an increase in shower chances overnight, sitting at around 60 percent. The low will be near 50.

Saturday will be the most eventful weather day of the weekend. Shower will be likely with possible thunderstorms all day. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent. Much cooler temperatures for the high as it will only get up to around 64. Gust winds will also factor into the equation. Winds will be 13 to 21 mph with gusts as high as 31 mph. The overnight low will be near 41.

For the higher elevations, the moisture falling will be snow. There is a winter storm warning for Lemhi County that will run from 6pm Saturday night until 9am Monday. Heavy wet snow is possible above 6500 feet with 4 to 8 inches expected. Some of the highest peaks could see up to a foot of snow.

In the Snake River Plain, the rain chances will drop to 30 percent for Sunday with more gusty winds. It will also be the coldest day of the week, with the high near 59. Mostly cloudy overnight and a low around 40.

Another round of potential rain will show up Monday with a 40 percent chance. The highs will start to warm back up, getting up to 63 under partly sunny skies.

The sunshine and more normal seasonal temperatures will return for the rest of the week.
