Details released regarding situation on Garfield Street

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - UPDATE 11:15 a.m.: Idaho Falls Police report at approximately 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to an incident on Winston Ave. of a barricaded suicidal and armed individual.

Many Idaho Falls Police officers responded, and due to the nature of the incident, police informed residents in the immediate vicinity of the police activity and to remain in their homes to allow officers the space and environment to safely handle the situation.

Officers were able to contact the individual by phone and spent approximately 40 minutes speaking with the individual and were able to successfully talk the individual down and into exiting the residence shortly before midnight.

The individual was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation at a local hospital.

ORIGINAL: Idaho Falls Police responded to the 1300 block of Garfield Street Wednesday night.

Authorities sent out an alert to neighbors asking them to avoid the area. They lifted the alert around 12:15a Thursday morning.

Right now it is not known why police were on the scene.
