Russets secure first win of season over Idaho Falls in heavy rain

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – Shelley defeated Idaho Falls 24-14 in a rain-soaked high school football matchup in Idaho Falls, bringing the Russets' season record to 1-1.

Heavy rain impacted play throughout the second half as the Idaho Falls Tigers struggled to find an offensive rhythm. Shelley capitalized on a key second-half mistake by Idaho Falls to build a two-score lead.

The game turned in the third quarter when Idaho Falls mishandled a punt attempt as the rain intensified. Senior Jonny Sereno attempted to make a play with the ball, but was taken down by the Shelley special teams unit, forcing a turnover on downs. On the next play, Kyrev Hawker ran through the Tiger defense for a Russet touchdown, extending Shelley's lead to 24-7.

Idaho Falls continued to search for an offensive rhythm late into the fourth quarter. Facing a fourth down in the red zone, senior quarterback Will Thompson scrambled out of the pocket and dove for the pylon to score the Tigers' second touchdown of the night.

Shelley walks away with their first win of the season following a one point loss last week the Blackfoot Broncos. They head back home next to to take on the Sugar-Salem Diggers. For Idaho Falls, they will look for their first win of the year next week, when they take on the Teton Timberwolves in Driggs.
