(CNN) — A person was shot during an encounter with federal immigration agents in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department.
Just after 4 p.m., agents with ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations — a branch of ICE focused on arresting undocumented immigrants — encountered a person they were targeting, and they fired shots, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.
The person injured in the shooting was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was conscious, police said. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to the law enforcement source.
Two agents were also injured in the encounter, according to the source, and they also are being treated at a local hospital. One of the agents may have been injured in a car accident, though it’s unclear if the accident was part of the arrest or response, according to a federal official.
CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
Witnesses told officers they heard five to six gunshots and people screaming, according to police officials.
NYPD were not involved in the incident in the Marble Hill neighborhood just north of Manhattan and were not at the scene of the shooting, the department said in a statement on X.
After the shooting, NYPD officials called for a mobilization to deal with crowd control and evidence at the scene.
Hours after the shooting, agents with Homeland Security Investigations and police officers could be seen walking behind yellow police tape as a group of protesters started gathering at the scene.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she’s been briefed on the incident.
“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” she said in a statement. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.
