ARCO, Idaho (KIFI) — The Butte County Joint School District #111 is taking a firm stance against hate speech following a recent incident where a student painted swastikas on the district's cross-country course after a recent sporting event.

In an official letter to the community, Superintendent Dr. Joel Wilson strongly condemned the act, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in Butte's schools or community.

"This behavior is deeply troubling and does not reflect the values we expect of our students or our community," Wilson wrote. "The swastika is a symbol of antisemitism, hatred, and the persecution and murder of millions of people. Its presence at a school athletic event is unacceptable, regardless of the intent behind it."

According to the letter, the incident happened after a cross-country meet held as part of the district's Homecoming week celebrations. While Wilson praised the community for coming together to celebrate Homecoming, he stressed that the vandalism required immediate and direct attention.

Wilson pledged that the district will address the incident appropriately and reinforce their expectations regarding respect, responsibility, and sportsmanship among students. He also called on parents to play an active role in teaching their children about the history, meaning, and harm hate symbols cause.

"Butte County has a strong tradition of hard work, resilience, and neighbors helping neighbors. Every student, family, and community member deserves to feel safe, welcome, and valued at our schools and events. We all share a responsibility to uphold those standards, even when doing so requires difficult conversations," wrote Wilson.
