Woman sentenced for father’s death
REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - Jessica Conser was sentenced to 18 years in prison Monday for the shooting death of her father, Matthew Robert Travo III, outside his Hibbard home on June 6, 2018.
A judge sentenced Conser today for the killing of Matthew Robert Travo III outside his Hibbard home.
He also heard statements from Conser's brother and stepmother about the impact the murder had on their family.
“When first asked by prosecutors office if I wanted to pursue the death penalty I said no for three reasons. One, I know my dad and even now I can hear him in the back of my mind, he wouldn’t want that at all. Two, how would I ever explain a decision like this to my niece and nephew when they become adults. Finally, the death would be an easy way out for her, we all have to live with what she has done, and so should she," said Conser's brother, Matthew Travo Jr.
The 35-year old mother of two was previously diagnosed with schizophrenia.
When deciding the sentencing, some of the things the judge said he considered was the fact that she didn't have a previous criminal record, her medical evaluations, and the protection of society.
The State recommended a minimum of thirty years in prison, while Conser's attorney recommended seven years.
During the hearing Conser also made a statement, "I’m so sorry for what I’ve done. I live with the pain and emotions every day. I took a loving father and husband away from his family, including myself. I love my dad and I miss him.”
Although her brother and stepmother have a no-contact order issued, her mother and children may contact her if they wish.
Conser does have the right to appeal within 42 days if she feels there was an error.
