Two Fires Burning Along Idaho-Montana Border
Two lightning caused fires are burning along the Idaho-Montana border north of Salmon.
Fire managers say the Saddle Fire started on Aug. 18 is burning in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and has now moved into Bitterroot National Forest.
The Stud Fire is outside the wilderness, they said. Both fires have burned approximately 750 acres.
Both fires are said to be burning in an area that has not been impacted by fire in more than 100 years.
Firefighters said point protection strategies are in place around Horse Creek Hot Springs, Oreana Lookout, and the Gattin Ranch, all on the Salmon-Challis National Forest. They also said they are beginning to scout and prep areas of the West Fork Ranger District that requires protection.
Fire officials were forced to close the Horse Creek Hot Springs Monday because of the fire?s proximity to the campground. But they said there are no trail closures, however, hikers are cautioned to be aware of the potential for such closures.
Agency officials chose not to staff the Stud Fire due to the high safety risks to firefighters in the steep terrain and dense fuels.
