Trash In Ammon Still On The Streets

People living in Ammon have been asking the same question since Tuesday: Where is the trash pick-up? The city of Ammon had a stroke of bad luck when both of its garbage trucks broke down. And they aren’t an easy fix.

“Well we looked at the calendar to see if it was a holiday,” sais Renee Quinton, a resident of Ammon.

“Is there a holiday I didn’t think about?” said Sheila Rush, a resident of Ammon.

City Planning Director Ron Folsom said the only way people knew the trucks had broken down is if they called in to see why their trash hadn’t been picked up.

Trash days in Ammon can vary but in one area, Monday night is normally when people some people in Ammon roll out their trash and by Tuesday iit is picked up. But days later, there is still no trash pick-up.

“So when I called Ammon, they had a recording,” said Quinton.

“Garbage pick-up is delayed. Both of the residential trucks are experiencing issues. We hope to have them up and running soon. If you will leave your garbage bins out, we will pick them up as soon as possible,” said the recording on the City of Ammon phone message.

“It would have been nice just to know. I am not really irritated, but it was kind of an inconvenience and just wondering what was going on and when it was going to be taken care of,” said Rush.

With 95 degree weather, trash can spoil.

“Go walk by that trash can and smell it, they are going to have to do some real scrubbing with it,” said Quinton

But what about personal security?

“Didn’t occur to me that could be an issue, so that is something to consider,” said Rush.

“If someone wants to go through my trash, I usually shred everything. You know one man’s treasure is another mans trash. If they want to go through it, go for it all — they will find is coffee grounds, eggshells and a bunch of old food,” said Tony Dineen, a Ammon resident.

But the biggest concern among people in Ammon was not knowing what was going on. Folsom said the city doesn’t have a mass texting or calling plan in place, due to cost. As of now they have two dump trucks and one rented truck is being used.

Folsom said they didn’t send out a press release because they didn’t expect the repairs on the trucks to take so long. Trash pick-up started back up Wednesday afternoon and will continue through Saturday.
