Girl Remains Critical After SUV Slides Into Lake

Officials in northern Idaho say a 1-year-old girl remains hospitalized in critical condition after a weekend accident in which the SUV she was riding in slid into a lake.

The Kootenai County sheriff’s office says River Deshazer is hospitalized in Spokane, Wash., after the accident that killed her 5-year-old brother, Evan Deshazer.

Investigators say 25-year-old Sarah Deshazer of Coeur d’Alene was trying to turn an SUV around on a narrow road Sunday afternoon when one wheel went off the road, causing the SUV to slide down an embankment into Lake Fernan, east of Coeur d’Alene.

Sarah and her husband, 28-year-old Michael Deshazer, were able to get out of the vehicle, but could not reach their children before it sank in about 12 feet of murky water.
