Community comes together after food pantry’s truck sidelined by theft

Milton, New Hampshire (WMUR ) — A food pantry in Milton thanked the community on Tuesday after people rallied around the organization, following a crippling theft.
The food pantry is a small operation that fills a big void for many people in the Milton area. The We Care Food Pantry provides meals for more than 100 families every week. But, last week, they were dealt a heavy blow when someone stole the catalytic converter from the pantry’s truck.
“I got inside, turned it on and right off the bat, sounded like an old thrashing machine. Best way I can describe it, extremely loud,” said Roger Eaton from the food pantry.
Without the truck, the pantry could not pick up food in Manchester for the families they serve.
“People just started responding. People said, ‘Can we give you a couple dollars, can we give you a check, can we donate something,’” Eaton said. “I mean, people came in from the town, from the communities.”
The cost of a U-Haul to pick up last week’s food was covered and a garage in Rochester offered to work on the truck for free. The cost of another catalytic converter, an expensive piece, was handled by another donation.
“It was devastating when it happened. It was very hurtful and devastating,” Eaton said. “But, in reality, it just showed how people are good, people do amazing things that we never hear about.”
