ISU named one of safest schools

Idaho State University may be one of the safest campuses in the country, according to a new national survey of colleges.

According to collegesafe.com ISU is the fifth safest university in the country.

Devshikha Bose has been at ISU for years and said she hasn’t felt scared or insecure at all, even when walking through campus in the middle of the night.

“I think it’s quite true, because I have been here six years and I have hardly had any problems at all. I have walked around the campus at like 1:00 am at night,” Bose said.

School shootings and threats and college campuses have made university safety a more pressing concern for some, especially for parents whose kids are leaving the nest for the first time.

“Many parents look at what the community provides the campus, and what the campus provides for their students,” ISU Director of Public Safety Steve Chatterton said.

But the importance of living and learning somewhere safe isn’t lost on many ISU students as well.

“If you’re going to school paying money, and if you’re living somewhere, and if you’re carrying a laptop with you, you want to make sure you are safe. And I think that is one of the reasons that people would choose ISU, because it is safe,” Bose said.

Chatterton said he can’t take all the credit for ISU’s safety, he said it mostly comes down to the people who live in the area and the students who chose to come here.

“We have a good relationship with the faculty staff and students. And they are really the core of helping us to be a safe campus,” Chatterton said.
